09/14/11 - Work began on the eastern edge of the Weston Reservoir on September 14, 2011. Project staff will access the area through the paved MWRA road off Newton Street, Weston. Regular work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00AM-5:00PM. Work is expected to take four months.

The first task will be to remove approximately 270 large white pines (including the stumps) along the steep slope of the dam. This process will take approximately two weeks. It should be noted that trees on the slope of dams must be removed because they could eventually compromise the integrity of the dam. Upon completion of tree removal, the slope of the dam will be re-graded and seeded.

Next, a new 1000 foot long, 36-inch high crest and parapet wall will be constructed along the top of the dam providing increased protection from heavy flooding events, in compliance with the ODS regulations. MWRA recognizes the beauty and historical significance of the Weston Reservoir landscape and has planned this work with these values in mind.

Public Access Impacts: For safety reasons, the public access paths over the 1,000 linear feet of dam will be closed during tree removal. The remainder of the reservoir lands and trails will remain open to the public.

Contractors: The project contractor is the T Ford Company of Georgetown, Massachusetts. The tree removal contractor is Mayer Tree.
