Update for MWRA Northern Intermediate High Project
in Reading and Woburn

 Overview of work to be performed in Reading and Woburn under MWRA Contract 7471 About this Project: The Northern Intermediate High Project will provide water system redundancy to MWRA's Northern Immediate High service area, which serves the fully-supplied communities of Reading and Stoneham and to the partially-supplied communities of Wakefield, Wilmington, Winchester, and Woburn. MWRA supplies water to the Northern Intermediate High service communities through a single transmission main: Section 89. Because there is currently no fully-redundant pipeline for Section 89, it can not be taken out of service for inspection and repairs. The potential loss of Section 89 would result in a rapid loss of service in Reading, Stoneham and Woburn, and possible water restrictions in Wakefield, Wilmington and Winchester. MWRA is installing a total of 36,000 linear feet of new water main varying in diameter from 12-in to 48-inch (Sections 110 and 112) and appurtenances such as valves, that will provide water system redundancy and allow MWRA to take Section 89 out of service for inspection and rehabilitation. This work is to be performed through four construction contracts. The first contract was completed in May 2015. The overall project is expected to be complete in June 2019. June 8, 2017 The MWRA along with our contractor Albanese D&S will begin restoring roadways on Monday June 26, 2017. The work will begin on Oak Street, Reading. The restoration/paving work will take approximately one month to complete. The following week on Wednesday July 5, 2017 the contractor will begin the restoration/paving work on Summer and Hopkins Street. This phase of work will take approximately two weeks to complete. Join onine at: May 18, 2017 The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and our contractor Albanese D&S will be working on North Street in Stoneham in the area from George Street to Main Street. Within this location the contractor will be installing an eight inch sewer line. The work within this area will take approximately three weeks from today to complete. The road will be shutdown daily from 7:00am-4:00pm. On the other side of Main Street, Stoneham, heading towards Prospect Street and the golf course the contractor will be installing a 16 inch water main. This work will also take approximately three weeks to complete from today. Traffic will be alternating within the area and hours of operation are from 7:00am-4:00pm. In the area just past the golf course in Wakefield the contractor will be installing a meter vault along with the associated meter. In Woburn on Washington Street in the area of the mall the contractor will be paving in the evening. They will be working this evening from 9pm-5am. Next week the contractor will resume Sunday evening at 9pm-5am and work all week during the evening hours. Traffic will be alternating. MWRA has recently developed a new notification system for communicating information to residents regarding construction projects, community meetings and more. Update 02/16/17 Vault Installation on Louannis Drive, Expected to Be Complete in 4-5 Weeks The MWRA and our contractor, Albanese D&S, is currently working on Louannis Drive. This week the contractor plans to install a large vault structure within the Drive. Work within this area will continue with the installation of additional piping and appurtenances associated with the project. It is expected to take approximately four to five weeks to complete the work at this location. Updates on spring clean up and restoration will be given within the next month as the weather improves. The MWRA appreciates your patience and cooperation during this important improvement project. December 22, 2016 MWRA and our contractor Albanese D&S Inc. will continue to work in the area of Leach Park assembling the valves, meters, and pipe work associated with this type of work. This work will continue through the end of January. West Street- just off of West Street on Louannis Street a large vault along with a meter and connections need to be made. This work will begin in February and will last approximately two months. At this point in the project the contractor has installed approximately 8,300 feet of 36-inch water pipe. The project calls for 8600 feet. MWRA has recently developed a new notification system for communicating information to residents regarding construction projects, community meetings and more. November 18, 2016 Main Street- all of the 36 inch pipeline has been installed. The pipe connection at South Street remains to be installed. Hopkins Street- at Main Street we need to install approximately 50 more feet of pipe, a large valve structure, valve, and thrust block. This work will be ongoing through the third week of December. Moving further down Hopkins Street at the park/staging area beginning around mid December a large vault along with a meter and a number of pipe connections need to be made as well as pipe installation. This is a fair amount of work which will take approximately two months to complete. Hopkins Street at this location will be blocked off and traffic will be routed around the area during construction hours only. Summer Street- final curb to curb paving remains to be installed. Oak Street- final curb to curb paving remains to be installed. West Street- just off of West Street on Louannis Street a large vault along with a meter and connections need to be made. This work will begin in February and will last approximately two months. Areas where work is completed will be temporarily paved. Hopkins, Summer, and Oak Street will be completely paved curb to curb late May/June of 2017. Sprinkler systems that were disturbed will be repaired in the Spring. At various locations throughout the project area the contractor and MWRA crews will be performing flushing and pressure testing of the newly installed pipe. To date approximately 8000 feet of 36 inch pipe has been installed. The project calls for a total of 8600 feet. October 6, 2016 Evening Work in Reading Rescheduled Our contractor, Albabnese D&S, has rescheduled the start of night work, originally set for October 2, 2016. Beginning on October 10, the contractor will begin work at 9:00 PM each evening and finish the following morning at approximately 5:00 AM. September 28, 2016 Evening Work in Reading Required Dear Resident: The construction work zone is located on Main Street from South Street to Hopkins Street, Reading. The contractor plans to start at South Street and proceed towards Hopkins Street. It is anticipated this work will be complete in approximately one month. Water service to your home will not be interrupted. The MWRA and our communities served operate a complex water distribution network consisting of hundreds of miles of pipes and hundreds of valves. These valves and pipelines connect community water lines to the MWRA’s network of larger pipes. The MWRA apologizes for any inconvenience this important water operation may present. August 9, 2016 Important Public Notice Dear Resident: Working in conjunction with the Town of Woburn Water Department there will be a temporary water outage during the nighttime (9:00PM-5:00AM) which will affect Washington Street on the following date(s): August 9th- August 10th This Massachusetts Water Resources Authority project is Phase II of building a new transmission service pipeline called the Northern Intermediate High Pipeline which will travel through the towns of Stoneham, Reading, Wakefield, and Woburn. The transmission pipeline will improve water supply to this service area. MWRA CONTACT: July 28, 2016 Note to Oak Street Residents and Neighbors Dear Resident: As you know, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and our contractor, Albanese D&S, Inc. of Dracut are currently installing a new redundant 36” water main in your neighborhood. This week the contractor has worked long hours in order to complete the deep and difficult work associated with installing new pipe beneath the existing drainage culvert (near Oak Ridge Road) prior to the rain that has been forecast for tomorrow. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused you over the course of this past week. Pipe Installation in Reading Continues 
Work being performed on Oak Street, Reading Currently Albanese D&S has two crews working on the project. One crew is working in the area of Summer Ave and Hopkins Street disconnecting the temporary bypasses and transferring them over to the permanent local water supply line. The other pipe installation crew has been working in the area of the Joshua Eaton School. It is anticipated this work will take another three weeks to complete. Work within the school area will be complete prior to the start of school. Police details will be present to assist with construction zone activities as well as traffic. Please note residents may be requested to move their vehicles from their driveway areas as the contractor advances by resident’s driveways with the pipe installation. This may occur on a couple of occasions. Notice will be provided in advance to allow for vehicle relocation. To date the contractor has installed approximately 3,900 feet of 36 inch water pipe. The project requires the installation of 8,600 feet of 36 inch pipe. Last week Oak Street was opened to traffic. Work in Woburn to Begin July 31, 2016 Beginning on Sunday July 31 at approximately 8:30PM Albanese D&S will begin working within Woburn. Work will begin in the area of the post office and proceed towards Reading. This phase of work in Woburn requires the contractor to perform the work in the evening. Hours of work will be from 8:30PM to 5:30AM. This work should be complete by November. Once again thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this important improvement project. MWRA CONTACT: July 1, 2016 Important Notice: Closure of Oak Street The MWRA‘s contractor, Albanese D&S Inc, is installing a large concrete valve structure below ground on Oak Street. Due to the large excavation, on site crane, and structure size most of the street will be occupied in order to complete the work. For safety reasons, the MWRA requested a traffic detour. Working in conjunction with various Town of Reading departments including the Public Safety departments of Police and Fire, you will receive a notification via reverse 911. Oak Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between Summer Ave and Hillcrest Ave for approximately three weeks in order to excavate, remove ledge and complete installation of the concrete structure. Access to the school playground will remain open and no driveways will be affected. Oak Street will be closed beginning on the following date: Thursday June 30th, 2016. MWRA CONTACT: May 25, 2016 The contractor, Albanese D&S, is currently working at the end of Hopkins Street in Reading. Once Hopkins Street is complete they will then proceed onto Summer Avenue. On Summer Ave, the contractor will be installing the new 36 inch pipe and will also replace the Town of Readings 12 inch water main. In order to replace the 12 inch line, the contractor will need to install temporary by pass connections to approximately 15 homes. The bypass connections will remain in service for approximately two to three months. Residents who will be impacted by the bypass connections will receive notifications. Please note, similar work will also be occurring in two other locations while the contractor is working within the area. The other locations are sections of Oak Street and Washington Street. MWRA and contractor Albanese D & S Construction will begin work in Reading to install a new 36-inch water pipe on Monday March 28, 2016. MWRA would like to invite residents to a public meeting to discuss the project and introduce the contractor. The meeting will be held on Thursday April 14, 6:30pm at the Joshua Eaton School Cafetorium, 365 Summer Avenue, Reading, MA. Construction activity will begin on Hopkins Street in the area of Hopkins and Main Street (Rt. 28), Reading, MA. The contractor anticipates installing approximately 20-30 feet per day. At the end of each week the excavated trench area will be temporarily paved. Residents will be updated periodically as the construction progresses.
