Best Management Practices

The Deer Island Treatment Plant's discharge permit requires MWRA to develop a Best Management Practices (BMP) plan to mitigate pollution at Deer Island Treatment Plant as well as at other MWRA facilities: Combined Sewer Overflow Treatment Facilities, Headworks, and the Sludge-to-Fertilizer (Pellet) Plant.

MWRA also maintains BMP plans for its pump stations, to ensure that proper standards are enforced.

The BMP plans, and any changes in facility operation that increase the potential for ancillary activities (materials storage areas, site runoff, accidental spillage, etc.) that result in receiving water impacts, are available to the public (see the list below).

The Best Management Practices plans are maintained at each of the following facilities:

  • Deer Island Treatment Plant
  • Sludge-to-Fertilizer (Pellet) Plant at Fore River
    Headworks Facilities
  • Nut Island
  • Ward Street
  • Columbus Park
  • Chelsea Creek

    Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities

  • Cottage Farm
  • Prison Point
  • Somerville Marginal

    Pump Stations

  • Hough's Neck lift station
  • Alewife Brook
  • Alison Hayes
  • Braintree-Weymouth
  • Caruso
  • DeLauri
  • Framingham
  • Hingham
  • Intermediate
  • Neponset
  • Quincy
  • Squantum

MWRA will also notify the EPA and MADEP within 60 days of any change in facility operation that materially increases the potential for ancillary activities to result in a release of hazardous or toxic pollutants.
