History of the Upper Neponset Valley Sewer

The Upper Neponset Valley Sewer was constructed between 1896 and 1902.

Why this project is needed

The original Upper Neponset Valley no longer has the hydraulic capacity to efficiently transport modern-day amounts of sewerage. As a result, this sewer overflows several times per year during very wet weather.

To bring the Upper Neponset Valley Sewer to appropriate hydraulic levels, MWRA must replace approximately 2.3 miles of sewer pipe in West Roxbury.

Expected improvements

This project will reduce overflows to adjacent residential areas and water bodies in Brookline, Boston, Newton and Dedham.
