MWRA's contractor begins night work (8PM-6AM) on Sunday, June 2nd at the intersection of River and Willow Streets in Waltham. D’Amico, Inc. is excavating one of eleven access pits at this location for the purpose of placing a new 24” inch water main into an existing 30” pipe.
Night work is limited to two locations in Waltham: The intersection of Willow Street and River Street and the intersection of River Street and Seyon Street. MWRA has hired J. D’Amico, Inc. of Randolph, Massachusetts to slipline 5,300 feet of 24-inch pipe through an existing 30-inch pipe, and to install 400 feet of new, 24-inch pipe where required.
The work will be completed this construction season (May-December 2013). The existing water pipe is located below the sidewalk and in River Street on the north side of the road starting from Newton Street in Waltham through Pleasant Street in Watertown.
The project involves digging access pits at eleven locations (see map) to access the existing 30-inch water pipe. The contractor will fuse 54-foot sections of pipe together to combined lengths of approximately 500-feet, place the pipe on the sidewalk or street, then pull the new 24-inch pipe into the old pipe. This construction method avoids digging up the entire street to replace a water pipe.
