MWRA Work on the Section 60 Pipeline - Arlington

Starting on Monday, July 17, 2023, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will install a new blow-off assembly for the Section 60 pipeline. This work will occur at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Highland Avenue in the Town of Arlington. Once the blow-off assembly has been installed, it will improve system reliability by enabling the Authority to better provide maintenance of the infrastructure without needing to coordinate extended water shutdowns into the Arlington system.

This work will last approximately two to three weeks to complete, weather and other conditions permitting. Important to note, in order to drain the water pipe and install the new infrastructure, a temporary water shutdown will take place; however, that will impact a very small amount of residents in the immediate area. Impacted homes will be notified prior to when the temporary water shutdown occurs, which is expected to last approximately four to five hours.

Other important details of the project include:

  • Eastern Avenue will be restricted to one-lane with alternating two-way traffic to enable proper and safe conditions for work crews as they excavate an access pit in the roadway and install the infrastructure. A detour will not be in place.
  • A police detail and project signage will be on site to assist vehicular traffic during construction activities, which will occur Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 3:00PM.
  • Additionally, during non-work hours (nights and weekends) steel plates will be in place to allow normal traffic use.
