MWRA Maintenance Expected to Impact Traffic along Medford Street & Canal Street, Malden

Beginning Monday, December 12, 2022, MWRA has arranged with the City of Malden to excavate at the intersection of Medford Street and Canal Street for repairs to a critical water supply line. An active leak with surfacing water was detected on this pipeline and, until repairs can be completed, residences in Malden and several communities in the northeast Metro Boston area may notice reduced water pressures approximately 6 psi lower than normal.

Excavation, repairs and restoration may take up to 2 weeks to complete and will be done on weekdays between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. The work is expected to extend into the north crosswalk of the intersection. Residents are advised that there will be no left turn onto Canal Street from Medford Street while this work is going on. While two-way traffic will be allowed on Medford Street, residents should expect slow travel times through this area.

Normal water pressure is expected to be restored when the work is completed; however, some discolored water may be possible for 1 to 2 days following the reactivation of the water main. If discolored water does occur, it will be from a small amount of iron in local pipes. Please note that iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used. Residents should check water clarity before washing any white or lighter colored laundry during this period of work.  Residents may want to wait for the water to clear before using it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Sean Navin at (617) 788-1112 or sean.navin@mwra.com.
