MWRA Urges Water Conservation

CCR Cover

10/07/22 UPDATE: After multiple recent precipitation events in September that directly benefited Massachusetts’ hydrological systems, Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Beth Card announced that drought conditions have improved in all regions of the state, and made the following drought declarations:

  • the Western Region has been upgraded to Level 0 (Normal Conditions);
  • the Connecticut River Valley, Central Region, and Southeast Regions have been upgraded to Level 1 (Mild Drought);
  • and, the Northeast and Cape Cod Regions have been upgraded and will join the Islands Region as a Level 2 (Signficant Drough)t.

MWRA's water supply system is not currently experiencing drought conditions, as defined within its individual plan, but encourages water conservation wherever you can. Click here to see tips on saving water at home, both indoors and outdoors.

08/31/22 UPDATE: The Commonwealth has declared a Level 3 Critical Drought across most of the Commonwealth, due to minimal precipitation and higher temperatures over the past few months.

Please visit the Commonwealth's Drought Monitoring site here for more information about the state wide drought. MWRA's water supply system is not currently experiencing drought conditions, as defined within its individual plan, but encourages water conservation wherever you can.

Massachusetts has been experiencing an extended dry period over the last few months and the Commonwealth has declared a Level 2 Significant Drought in many parts of the state. Since the early 1980s, MWRA’s water communities have successfully reduced water usage by over 30%, which means that the Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs are still near full and in the normal operating range for this time of year.  Although MWRA will not be issuing mandatory water restrictions on our member communities, it is always important to conserve water wherever you can, so that if the drought continues, we will have the water we need.
