The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is planning to install a water transmission pipeline from the Lynnfield/Saugus town line up to Peabody. As part of the design effort, MWRA has hired CDM Smith, Inc. and other firms, to perform sub-surface geotechnical exploration program along the proposed pipeline alignment (see map. PDF).

The subsurface exploration program for this project will be divided into two (2) phases. Phase I will include an initial test boring program of up to 57 test borings conducted along the proposed Section 109 Extension pipe alignment (see map. PDF). Activities involve blocking off a small area of the road with a truck and a boring rig, and drilling down to a depth of 15 to 20 feet and removing rock and soil samples. At each location the work will take 4-5 hours. MWRA has 57 sites planned for Phase I. The locations are shown in Table 1 below.

Phase 2 will be conducted during final design, next year, and will consist of up to an additional 56 test borings strategically located to supplement the Phase 1 borings.

Phase I is scheduled to begin the week of September 11 and continue until through October 2017. Work on Lynnfield streets will typically occur between 7AM and 5PM, Monday through Friday. Work along Rte 1 (Broadway) will occur between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. starting Sunday night and ending early Friday evening. Construction Zone Safety Plans, including local police details in certain locations, will be provided for traffic control, and ensuring worker and general public safety in each area.
