You may have read a recent article talking about perfluorinated compounds, in particular Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in drinking water. PFOA is used in the manufacture of Teflon and other products, and some areas near manufacturing plants have had PFOA detections.

From 2013 through 2015, MWRA has tested for and did not find:

• Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)
• Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS)
• Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)
• Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS)
• Perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA)
• Perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS)

These compounds would not be expected to be found in MWRA water since MWRA’s reservoirs, the Quabbin and Wachusett, are very well protected, and mostly surrounded by conservation land.
