Residents may notice a barge out in the water along the beaches in South Boston over the next few weeks.
The barge is there to support divers who are inspecting the old stormwater outfalls. The MWRA’s new South Boston CSO Storage Tunnel, which was completed in May 2011, now captures stormwater and combined sewer overflows that used to regularly discharge onto the beaches in wet weather. However, in a catastrophic storm event, the old outfalls may have to be put into use. Therefore, MWRA must assess their condition and ensure they are maintained in working order.
This work should be completed before Labor Day.
