Tunnel Worker Taken to Hospital

At about 11:00 this morning, a train operator working on MWRA’s South Boston CSO Storage Tunnel project became ill and was taken to the hospital. The operator was able to exit the tunnel on his own.

Boston EMT and Fire Department responded and determined that the worker had elevated levels of carbon monoxide.

Air sampling tests, which are performed continuously, did not show any increased levels of carbon monoxide in the tunnel. These results were confirmed by separate sampling verified by Boston Fire Department.

No other workers were affected and construction actives continue.

The South Boston CSO Storage Tunnel is 17-foot diameter, 2.1-mile long soft ground tunnel that will eliminate combined sewer overflows and stormwater discharges to the beaches in South Boston. It is being constructed by a joint venture of Shank/ Belfour/ Beatty/Barletta for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
