Due to the project’s impacts on streets, traffic and residential areas, the meeting is being held to inform the public of the construction schedule and to give area residents a chance to discuss the details of the project.
The MWRA’s work in Malden is part of a large program to rehabilitate the East and West Spot Pond Supply Mains, which are MWRA’s principal transmission mains for its Northern Low Service Area. This service area includes parts of Boston, Cambridge, Charlestown, Chelsea, East Boston, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville. The overall project consists of rehabilitating large sections of cast-iron pipe which were constructed from 1897 to 1900.
Access pits in Malden streets will be needed to allow construction equipment and workers to reach the 48" water pipelines and also to replace several water meters and valves.
During the course of the project, during the April to July period, there will be some construction work at the following Malden locations:
-Green and Medford Street intersection
-Bow and Green Street intersection
-Centre Street at Super Stop & Shop driveway
-Super Fitness parking lot at Exchange Street
-Washington Street north at Kneeland Street
-Washington and Clifton Street intersection
Beginning in April, some Malden residents may experience discolored water over short periods of time as water flows are altered during the construction project. MWRA will provide further updates on possible discolored water episodes.
MWRA’s construction contractor on this project is P. Gioioso & Sons, Inc, with W. Walsh Company as a subcontractor.
